Just added you. Btw ~ I may not comment much (b/c I don't have a home computer), but I really DO read my friends page so em...never feel neglected. Or at least not by me.

I'm all about LJ's random journal feature.

Thank God. For a moment I thought some single outsider may have actually found the trivial details of my life somehow amusing/worthwhile/fascinating. :P

Meh. If you never ever commented on my journal, I'd still love ya just the same. In a non-creepy way, of course.

And the trivial details of our lives is what LiveJournal is for!

Questions

Hey Jen... not sure if you remember me from high school, but we're both friends w/Amy G so maybe you've seen me comment there. Anyway, to make a really, really long story short, I wanted to ask you a few questions about your travels. I'm thinking about taking the fall semester off school and traveling, but I really don't know where to start in planning or anything along those lines, and wondered if you wouldn't mind answering a few things. I just wondered:
How much did you have saved before you left?
Were you ever lonely, traveling by yourself?
Did you work or have a job wherever you were, or did you just sight see and what not?
What are the downsides (and upsides) of traveling like that?

Basically I'm just really sick of college, and sick of my surroundings and need to do something before I go crazy. Any help would be appreciated. :) Thanks. -Angela

Ask as many question as you want! And yes! I remember you!

I saved roughly $4,500 plus the cost of my airplane ticket(s).

I could have been lonely, but you have to realize that I am a very, very introverted person. So what suited me, may not suit you. Personally, I like how it feels to be totally alone and out on my own, but I do know for many backpackers that was a very intimidating, daunting feeling.

I couldn't work, because Australia won't allow it. They're very strict about who they allow in and what they're allowed to do. Most European countries have an agreement with Australia that allows their citizens to work in Australia for upwards of a year with few restrictions, but the United States has no such agreement. So Americans are typically strictly forbidden to work there unless you have a sponsor lined up beforehand.

The downsides occurred more in Indonesia. Obviously, hawkers and street urchin are going to target someone who is walking alone. Also, some attractions (aka horse back riding, mountain hikes w/ a guide) require that more than one person attend for financial reasons, and being alone...you don't have that person. There's also a shitload of planning one must do, and you can't just pass it off onto someone else, which you know...I would never do. ;-) Most of the tedious planning revolves around travel via train, sea, and plane so you can probably imagine. On a philosophical level, you have to be very enthusiastic about your life and your trip. Because you won't be ruining anyone else's trip by having a bad attitude, you have to be your own cheerleader and level head.

Traveling alone is, however, way for more convenient. You're only pleasing yourself so there's no one to consult when making even the most trivial of travel plans.

Do you know where you want to go in general? Continents help.

Let me know if you have any more questions! And add me if you want!
